Stranded Marine Mammal Volunteer Training
April 29, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Those who enjoy walking Shelter Cove’s beaches and are interested to contribute to the conservation of local marine mammals are invited to join Friends of the Lost Coast and Dr. Dawn Goley, Director of Cal Poly Humboldt’s Stranded Marine Mammal Monitoring Program, for a volunteer training on Saturday, April 29 from 10am to 2pm. The training will start at 10am at the Shelter Cove Community Clubhouse, located 1555 Upper Pacific Dr., and will be followed by a field outing that will feature an opportunity to collect data on an actual stranded marine mammal.
Local residents are currently being sought for the Shelter Cove stranding team, which conducts once-monthly monitoring of area beaches. Travel stipends for beach monitors are available as well as a small monthly stipend for a Shelter Cove Community Coordinator. For more information, to volunteer as a citizen scientist, or to RSVP for the free training, email Dawn Goley at [email protected] or Justin Crellin from FOLC at [email protected].
