Lost Coast Lectures – Fungi, Mosses, Liverworts & Lichens kick off our 2026 series!

FOLC & BLM King Range’s popular Lost Coast Lectures return in January to kick off our 2026 series – which will feature free Zoom presentations by local experts who share their knowledge about our local fungi, mosses, liverworts, lichens and more!

On Wednesday, January 14, we partner with the Humboldt Bay Mycological Society to host their Board President, Mandy Hackney, for a talk about her work with the Fungal Diversity Survey (FUNDIS) – a non-profit organization that protects biodiversity through the conservation of fungi and their habitats. In this free event, attendees will learn about the value of protecting fungi and get a snapshot of California’s fungal biodiversity from one of FUNDIS’ own collectors. Click HERE to view the recording.

The series continues on Wednesday, January 28 with Paul Wilson and his lecture, Discovering Mosses and Liverworts with examples from Humboldt County. Paul was a professor of ecology and evolution at Cal State Northridge and currently serves as President of the North Coast Chapter of the California Native Plant Society. In this talk, he’ll discuss the extraordinary and little-known world of mosses and liverworts, highlighting local examples from Humboldt County. Click HERE to view the recording.

The final installment in this series, An Introduction to the Wonderful World of Lichens, will be on Thursday, March 5 with Sarah Norvell, botanist with Redwood National Park and Board member of the Humboldt Bay Mycological Society.
