Geology of the Wildcat Group Hike

August 26, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Officially titled “California’s Coastline – Uplift, Erosion, and the Hidden Geologic Grandeur of the Lost Coast Headlands,” join FOLC and Sanctuary Forest on Saturday, August 26 for the second of two summer geology hikes with BLM Geologist, Sam Flanagan. We’ll do a moderately steep hike down to the beach and explore one of California’s most rapidly eroding coastlines. This piece of coastline is dominated by the Wildcat Formation, a series of geologically young marine sedimentary rocks revealing landslides, an occasional fossil, and a testament to the forces shaping this piece of Northern California.  The hike will take place on either Fleener Creek or Guthrie Creek Trail (TBA) in Lost Coast Headlands, a 653 acre BLM tract just south of Centerville Beach at the far northern end of the Lost Coast.  The group will meet at 10am at the Lost Coast Headlands parking area on Centerville Rd. This is a moderately steep trail to the beach, with walking along soft sands. Space is limited and advance registration is required. Email [email protected] for more details or to RSVP.
