SUMMARY:Leave No Trace Training
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in public lands and want to help keep them pristine?  If so\, this Leave No Trace training is for you!  Entitled\, Effective Communication of Leave No Trace Principles\, this free training\, offered by the Bureau of Land Management and conducted by a trainer from the Leave No Trace Center\, will be on Monday\, May 1 from 1 to 3:30p.m. at the Lost Coast Education Center – located near 768 Shelter Cove Rd in Whitethorn.  Volunteers for the BLM and volunteers/staff with local environmental service organizations are encouraged to attend\, as are members of the general public interested to learn more about the principles of Leave No Trace. SUMMARY:Punta Gorda Lighthouse & Elephant Seal Hike
DESCRIPTION:Punta Gorda is a favorite Lost Coast destination that offers stunning coastal scenery\, an historic lighthouse\, and a thriving elephant seal colony.  On Sunday\, May 7 join Mattole Restoration Council and Friends of the Lost Coast for an interpretive hike with BLM Archaeologist\, Sharyl Kinnear-Ferris; and Dr. Dawn Goley\, Professor of Zoology at Cal Poly Humboldt; for this unique outing to learn about both the history and preservation of the Punta Gorda light station and the elephant seal colony that resides nearby.   \nThe group will meet at 10a.m. at the Mattole Beach parking area\, located at the end of Lighthouse Rd in the Petrolia area.  From there\, we will caravan a short distance to Windy Point Rd\, before embarking on a 1.8 mile steep downhill hike to Punta Gorda.  Space is limited and pre-registration is required.  Participants are encouraged to bring water and a snack\, dress in layers\, and wear sturdy (preferably waterproof) footwear\, plus are encouraged to travel in a 4WD vehicle.  This hike is weather dependent and could be canceled in the event of rain\, high creeks\, or strong winds. DESCRIPTION:Local trail enthusiasts are invited to join Friends of the Lost Coast for a Trail Stewards workday at Tolkan Campground in the King Range on Sunday\, May 14 from 10a.m. to 2p.m.\, weather permitting.  Tools will be provided and participants are encouraged to bring their own snacks\, water\, and gloves\, plus dress in layers and wear sturdy shoes.  Work will include brushing and debris removal on Paradise Royale Mountain Bike Trail and in/around the Tolkan Terrain Park. \nThanks to a partnership with BLM KRNCA\, Friends of the Lost Coast is offering a limited number of paid Trail Internship opportunities to local youth\, ages 12-16\, to work with the Lost Coast Trail Stewards. The stipends offer $10/hr and are available first come\, first served with no prior trail experience needed. SUMMARY:Shelter Cove Invasive Removal Workday
DESCRIPTION:Invasive plant removal at Black Sands Beach is the focus of this month’s BLM/Friends of the Lost Coast work party in Shelter Cove. On Sunday\, May 21\, volunteers are invited to lend a hand in stewarding their public lands by removing a variety of invasive plant species from this popular destination. The event runs from 10a.m. to 1p.m. and a limited number of $10/hr youth stipends are available\, for ages 12-16\, thanks to a grant from the CA Coastal Commission Whale Tail program. Meet 10a.m. at the Black Sands Beach monument site at the west end of the parking area\, 856 Beach Road in Shelter Cove. Tools and gloves are provided.
