SUMMARY:National Public Lands Day
DESCRIPTION:Friends of the Lost Coast and BLM King Range invite all for a day of service and fun on National Public Lands Day\, which we will be celebrating on Saturday\, October 5th in the King Range this year.  We’ll meet at 9:45 a.m. at Tolkan Campground on King Peak Rd.\, and work will focus on trail maintenance on the Paradise Royale Trail\, plus other projects to help prepare for a mountain bike race that is happening at the site later in the month.  The day will culminate with lunch at 1:30p.m and volunteers will also receive a National Public Lands Day t-shirt and free public lands pass.  National Public Lands Day is the largest volunteer stewardship event of the year\, with service projects happening throughout the U.S. !  A limited number of $10/hr stipends are available to youth\, ages 10-17.  Email justin@lostcoast.org for general event info or to register for a youth stipend.

DESCRIPTION:The basics of pole-style building using sustainably-harvested log poles will be covered in a free 3-day workshop hosted by Friends of the Lost Coast and BLM King Range at the Lost Coast Education Center in Whitethorn on September 20-22. Running 9am to 4pm all three days\, with 3-day commitment strongly encouraged\, the workshop will feature the master pole builders of Polecraft Solutions to create a 20×20 shade structure that will expand the native plant nursery at the site. SUMMARY:King Peak Moonlight Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join FOLC & BLM King Range on Sunday\, August 18 for a pre-full moon hike to King Peak\, highest point in King Range National Conservation Area and one of the tallest coastal peaks in the Lower 48 States.  Meet at the BLM office in Whitethorn at 3:30pm to caravan to Lightning Trailhead (4WD recommended).  We will then summit the peak (4088 ft)\, enjoy sunset\, and start our journey back under the light of the rising moon.  This 4.8 mile round trip hike includes nearly 2000 ft of elevation gain and will be strenuous for some.  Returning in the moonlight presents additional risks\, a factor that should be considered before signing up.  Space is limited for this popular hike and pre-registration is required.  Email info@lostcoast.org for more info or to RSVP.

SUMMARY:Hidden History & Ecology Hike @ Hidden Valley
DESCRIPTION:Join FOLC and Sanctuary Forest as we explore the Hidden Valley Trail in King Range National Conservation with representatives from BLM and members of the McKee family.  This free hike will bring the self-guided interpretive walk in the King Range brochure to life\, highlighting the McKee family’s history homesteading and running an inn at the site\, the transfer of the property to BLM in 1981\, the successful re-introduction of Roosevelt elk to Hidden Valley in 1983\, and varied interpretation about the diverse ecology and natural history found along the 2.3 mile loop trail\, which circumnavigates a beautiful grassland and features varied forest types and coastal vistas.  The hike leaves from Hidden Valley Trailhead on Chemise Mountain Rd at 10am and will conclude at approximately 1pm.  Space is limited.  Email info@lostcoast.org to register.

SUMMARY:Shelter Cove Adopt-A-Beach Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Join FOLC and BLM on Friday\, July 5th from 9am to 12pm for our second Adopt-A-Beach Cleanup of 2024! Timed to occur the morning after Shelter Cove’s massive July 4th festivities\, this is perhaps the most important beach cleanup of the year. We’ll meet 9am at Mal Coombs Park and will work until noon to keep Shelter Cove’s beaches clean and pristine. FOLC will also be offering a limited number of $10/hr stipends for youth\, ages 12-17\, courtesy of a grant from the CA Coastal Commission’s Whale Tail program. The hike is approximately 2 miles in length and highlights the unique candelabra trees\, plus discussion of the Lost Coast Redwoods project. DESCRIPTION:Tap into your creativity with two free Garden Illustration Workshops led by Jenna Catsos\, the illustrator behind Pen+Pine.  The original workshop\, from 10 to noon on Sunday\, June 2 filled quickly\, so a second workshop was just added from 1 to 3pm!!! \nDuring these workshops at the Lost Coast Education Center in Whitethorn\, Jenna will teach techniques for drawing with micron pen and colored pencils. She will cover: basic drawing techniques; how to use different lines and textures to achieve the look you are going for; tips for drawing plants on-site in the garden; and how to use composition and framing to elevate your drawing. We will also talk about finding inspiration in our daily lives and establishing a creative practice. \nJenna will provide micron pens\, paper\, and colored pencils. Participants are encouraged to bring a sketchbook if they have one. \nJenna is a Eureka-based illustrator and garden enthusiast. She has been drawing under the moniker Pen+Pen for almost ten years. Pen+Pine is the marriage of her interests in visual art\, education\, and the natural world.
