SUMMARY:Spring Lecture Series - ... Ramblings on the GeoEcology of CA "Serpentine"
DESCRIPTION:Continuing our Spring Lecture Series on geology\, soils ecology and related topics\, part 2 in the series will be presented via Zoom from 6:30p.m. to 7:30p.m. on Wednesday\, March 29th.  It features Hugh Safford\, Research Ecologist with UC Davis and Chief Scientist of Vibrant Planet\, presenting\, Vegetation Ecology\, Patterns of Plant Species Diversity and Endemism\, & General Ramblings on the GeoEcology of California “Serpentine.”  \nUltramafic “serpentine” geologic substrates are well-known for their profound effects on vegetation structure. Serpentine in California also supports a disproportionately high number of native and endemic plant species. The presence of serpentine in California is closely tied to the geological and tectonic history of the state\, and patterns of diversity and endemism are driven by a complex suite of factors. Serpentine is also a major source of heavy metals in our ground and surface waters\, and asbestos in our air. Hugh will address these topics and others while conducting a virtual field trip through some of the more iconic serpentine localities in California\, plus Q&A at the end. \n<<<CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE RECORDING OF HUGH’S LECTURE>>> \n

SUMMARY:Winter Lecture Series - Cape Mendocino Lighthouse Takes Shelter In The Cove
DESCRIPTION:Continuing our Winter Lecture Series on the history and preservation of local lighthouses and the maritime culture they fostered along the Lost Coast\, part 2 will be offered via Zoom from 6 to 7pm on Tuesday\, January 31 and will feature Brenda McLaughlin\, historian with the Cape Mendocino Lighthouse Preservation Society.  Her talk\, Cape Mendocino Lighthouse Takes Shelter In The Cove\, will delve into the history of the Cape Mendocino Lighthouse from its’ origin in 1856\, to the big move in 1998\, to its’ new home at Mal Coombs Park in Shelter Cove. In this lecture\, we’ll learn more about out how the original location worked for helping ships in the late 1800’s and why the lighthouse needed to be moved. Then we’ll explore the details on how every piece of metal – screws\, bolts\, etc – were removed from the cliffs of Cape Mendocino and reassembled at the lighthouse reconstruction site. Historical photos will be shared\, along with many from the move of the lighthouse through present day\, plus a Q&A at the end. \nThis lecture is a co-presentation of Friends of the Lost Coast and Cape Mendocino Lighthouse Preservation Society\, in partnership with BLM King Range. \n<<<CLICK HERE TO WATCH THE RECORDING OF BRENDA’S LECTURE>>>
