DESCRIPTION:After a great hike to the rarely-visited top of Gilham Butte last summer\, FOLC is teaming up once again with local landowner\, John Miller\, on Sunday\, June 14 for this Return to Gilham Butte Hike! On this outing\, we’ll get an exclusive tour of this special BLM holding via private access\, high up in the Salmon Creek watershed. We’ll summit Gilham Butte (3050ft)\, experience the old-growth ridge-top forests of the holding’s Late Successional Reserve\, and learn about local ecology and native plants from FOLC’s own Cheryl Lisin. The strenuous hike is approximately 4+ miles round trip\, with several steep sections and some off-trail walking. Space is limited – with advance registration required. They feed birds\, support pollinators\, and keep ecosystems thriving – and on Saturday\, June 13\, Friends of the Lost Coast\, BLM King Range\, and the Humboldt County Office of Education celebrate all things caterpillars with a free event at the Lost Coast Nature Center in Whitethorn.  Anchored by a screening of the beautiful film\, The Extraordinary Caterpillar\, a new documentary by Jeff McKay\, the event also features Peter Haggard and Jane Monroe\, local biologists/entomologists/authors\, who will speak and lead a caterpillar-themed garden exploration. Additionally\, Wild Ginger offers caterpillar activities for kids and families throughout the day. DESCRIPTION:Want to learn about art techniques in a beautiful outdoor setting?  FOLC’s annual Art In The Garden Workshop is for you!  A free opportunity to learn from professional artists\, our 2026 event is Free Flow Plein Air with Laci Dane. Join us for a free mini acrylic painting session set in the beautiful gardens at the Lost Coast Nature Center in Whitethorn. Each student will receive one 7” x 11” wooden canvas to work on during this relaxing\, open-air experience. \nLaci will begin with a short tutorial on painting with acrylics on raw wood\, demonstrating techniques to achieve a light\, fluid effect similar to watercolor. From there\, you’ll choose your own spot in the garden and begin creating at your own pace. The session will focus on abstract\, soft color backgrounds—building layers gradually\, much like a watercolor painting—before moving into more defined elements such as flowers or any foreground subjects you feel inspired to explore. This is a deeply satisfying and therapeutic approach to painting\, emphasizing the freedom of the creative process and the joy of the journey\, rather than focusing on a final outcome. \nAll painting supplies will be provided\, however you are encouraged to bring a stand up easel of your own if you prefer to not work cross legged on the ground\, and perhaps a pillow or chair to make yourself more comfortable. \nSpace is limited is expected to fill quickly for two sessions – one from 11am to 1:30pm and the other from 2:00pm to 4:30pm – so don’t delay in registering with cheryl@lostcoast.org.

DESCRIPTION:Join FOLC & BLM for a rare organized outing to the Mill Creek area of King Range National Conservation Area on Saturday\, May 30. The approximately 950-acre Mill Creek Forest\, added to public ownership around 1995\, is designated by BLM as an Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) and is part of the King Range Wilderness. The tract protects a remnant of low-elevation\, old-growth Douglas fir forest\, a beautiful tributary to the lower Mattole River\, and features a community-designed trail system that showcases a diverse array of native plant species. The hike will be led by FOLC’s own native plant expert\, Cheryl Lisin; BLM Backcountry Ranger\, Kacie Hallahan; and authors of the book Plants of the Lost Coast\, Veronica Yates and Otter Anderson. The intimate hike is limited to 15 participants and runs from 10am to approximately 2pm. It is considered moderately strenuous. Stop by the Leave No Trace booth during these windows to meet our guests and learn how practicing Leave No Trace can help keep the Lost Coast wild\, safe\, and sustainable. \nThe larger Trailhead Hosts Weekend runs 4 days\, Friday\, May 22 through Monday\, May 25.  Volunteer shifts are 3 hours in length – 7-10am\, 10am-1pm\, 1-4pm – all days.  A free Communicating Leave No Trace workshop is offered for volunteers on Thursday\, May 21 from 10:30am to 2pm. SUMMARY:Neotropical Bird Hike in Salmon Creek
DESCRIPTION:Local naturalist and restoration ecologist\, Kyle Keegan\, will lead a Neotropical Bird Hike at the Fool’s Farm in the Salmon Creek watershed on Sunday\, May 3 from 8a.m. to 1p.m. Focus will be on the ecology\, identification and life history of neotropical birds. Land stewardship practices that can enhance local biodiversity will also be discussed. Participants are encouraged to bring sturdy shoes\, binoculars\, lunch\, water\, and sun protection. A limited number of $10/hr youth stipends are available to ages 10-17. Bring your own water. Gloves and tools provided. Rain cancels. SUMMARY:Stranded Marine Mammal Lecture w/ Dr. Dawn Goley
DESCRIPTION:FOLC\, BLM & Cal Poly Humboldt are excited to host a free lecture at the Shelter Cove Community Clubhouse on Friday\, April 10 with Dr. Dawn Goley\, Cal Poly Humboldt Professor of Zoology and Director of the North Coast Stranded Marine Mammal Monitoring Program.  In this lecture\, she will highlight the work of/data collected by the Shelter Cove Community Hub of this program and will share what we learned through the effort and how this relates to the larger data her team collected from over 200 miles of northern CA coastline\, plus share updates on recent viruses affecting marine mammal communities\, including leptospirosis and a recent avian flu found in the elephant seal colony at Ano Nuevo.  The Shelter Cove Community Clubhouse is located at 1555 Upper Pacific Dr. in Shelter Cove.  Doors at 5:30pm with potluck dinner/refreshments and lecture/Q&A at 6:30. \n* photo by Pamela Lauer

DESCRIPTION:The most effective way to protect and encourage biodiversity is to start locally – and on Tuesday\, April 7 at 6pm\, FOLC and BLM King Range present a standalone Zoom presentation with Peter Haggard and Jane Monroe as part of the Lost Coast Lectures series.  In the talk\, they will introduce topics from their book\, Rewilding: Native Gardening for the Pacific Northwest and North Coast\, and will discuss the process of converting (sub)urban yards into habitat for native plants and wildlife and why rewilding is important. If we act now\, in every neighborhood: gardens\, lawns\, parks\, and community gardens can all be rewilded. He worked for the Humboldt County Agricultural Commissioner’s Office as an Agricultural Inspector/Biologist for 35 years. Pete has taught garden-related courses at College of the Redwoods and Cal Poly Humboldt Extension\, and classes in entomology and pest identification for the UC Master Gardener Program. He is coauthor\, with Judy Haggard\, of Insects of the Pacific Northwest and has written many articles on insects and gardening. Since 1977\, he’s been landscaping his garden using native plants to attract endemic wildlife. \nJane Monroe has a BS and an MA in biology from Cal Poly Humboldt. Her master’s thesis was a study of the dune silver bee. She has worked as a biologist\, conducting habitat reviews for northern California plant and animal species. She also worked as a biology/zoology lecturer at CPH. \n

DESCRIPTION:Friends of the Lost Coast & BLM King Range continue the Lost Coast Lectures series on Fungi\, Mosses\, Liverworts & Lichens via Zoom on Thursday\, March 5\, with Sarah Norvell\, presenting An Introduction to the Wonderful World of Lichens.  Offering a glimpse into the fascinating world of lichenology\, this talk will provide beginners with an introduction to lichens\, including helpful tips and tricks for collection and identification. We will briefly discuss lichen DNA barcoding\, and you’ll be introduced to some of our most charismatic Lost Coast lichen species! \nOriginally from South Carolina\, Sarah received her bachelor’s degree in botany from Cal Poly Humboldt and went on to complete her master’s degree in biology under mycologist\, Dr. Terry Henkel\, studying lichens. Sarah now works as a botanist for Redwood National Park where she focuses on ecological restoration and rare plant conservation. It will be rescheduled for early 2027. \nA favorite Lost Coast destination\, Punta Gorda offers stunning coastal scenery\, an historic/recently renovated lighthouse\, and a thriving elephant seal colony – and\, on Saturday\, February 21\, join Mattole Restoration Council\, Friends of the Lost Coast & BLM King Range for a rare wintertime hike\, when enormous male elephant seals are present on the beach!  Featuring Dr. Dawn Goley\, Professor of Zoology at Cal Poly Humboldt\, this outing offers an opportunity to learn about the ever-growing elephant seal colony at Punta Gorda – with a special focus on male elephant seals. The group will meet at 10a.m. at the Mattole Beach parking area\, located at the end of Lighthouse Rd near Petrolia\, before caravanning a short distance in 4WD vehicles to Windy Point Rd for a 1.8 mile moderate downhill hike. This hike is weather and access road dependent. Participants should bring water and a snack\, dress in layers with rain jacket\, wear sturdy/waterproof footwear – and be prepared for a minor creek crossing.
