Email info@lostcoast.org to be added to the waitlist. \nCome out and explore the fantastic world of fungus with FOLC and BLM as we host a mushroom hunt in King Range National Conservation Area on Sunday\, December 14th from 10AM-3PM! This rain or shine event will offer opportunities to join an on-trail or off-trail cohort – and will feature three local mushroom enthusiasts as our guides:  Lost Coast Mike Paquet\, Mandy Hackney\, and Brittany Tonks. They will share their expertise as we explore the environs near Nadelos Campground and will discuss ethical foraging\, mushroom identification\, and more!  \nHeavy rain and/or strong winds cancel. Space is very limited and advance registration is required. Email info@lostcoast.org for more info or to RSVP. \nAbout our hike leaders: \nMike has been an avid collector of culinary mushrooms since the 1990’s. Over the last 15 years\, he has focused his efforts to learn about the local fungi of the Lost Coast and the King Range. He enjoys looking for the more challenging crust fungi and small ascomycete (cup) fungi\, often found under logs and in the smaller debris of the forest. \nMandy is a community mycologist and Cal Poly Humboldt graduate originally from rural Appalachia. Mandy is a former Fungi Collector for the CA FUNDIS Project and a former Curator for the Fungal Diversity Database on iNaturalist. Mandy is the President of the Humboldt Bay Mycological Society\, a Fungi Surveyor for Redwood National & State Parks’ Mycoflora Project\, and a Fungi Collector for the MycoMap CA Network.  \nBrittany has been observing fungi in Southern Humboldt for over a decade and is currently studying botany and mycology at Cal Poly Humboldt. Brittany is also a Fungi Collector for the MycoMap CA Network and a long standing member of the Humboldt Bay Mycological Society.

Through three powerful stories – from a flower farm on Chicago’s South Side\, to a forest school in rural Kentucky\, to a healing-in-nature program for military families in San Antonio – the film reveals how connection to the natural world can bridge divides\, strengthen communities\, and support youth mental health. It will be rescheduled for early 2027. \nA favorite Lost Coast destination\, Punta Gorda offers stunning coastal scenery\, an historic/recently renovated lighthouse\, and a thriving elephant seal colony – and\, on Saturday\, February 21\, join Mattole Restoration Council\, Friends of the Lost Coast & BLM King Range for a rare wintertime hike\, when enormous male elephant seals are present on the beach!  Featuring Dr. Dawn Goley\, Professor of Zoology at Cal Poly Humboldt\, this outing offers an opportunity to learn about the ever-growing elephant seal colony at Punta Gorda – with a special focus on male elephant seals. The group will meet at 10a.m. at the Mattole Beach parking area\, located at the end of Lighthouse Rd near Petrolia\, before caravanning a short distance in 4WD vehicles to Windy Point Rd for a 1.8 mile moderate downhill hike. This hike is weather and access road dependent. Participants should bring water and a snack\, dress in layers with rain jacket\, wear sturdy/waterproof footwear – and be prepared for a minor creek crossing. DESCRIPTION:Friends of the Lost Coast & BLM King Range continue the Lost Coast Lectures series on Fungi\, Mosses\, Liverworts & Lichens via Zoom on Thursday\, March 5\, with Sarah Norvell\, presenting An Introduction to the Wonderful World of Lichens.  Offering a glimpse into the fascinating world of lichenology\, this talk will provide beginners with an introduction to lichens\, including helpful tips and tricks for collection and identification. We will briefly discuss lichen DNA barcoding\, and you’ll be introduced to some of our most charismatic Lost Coast lichen species! \nOriginally from South Carolina\, Sarah received her bachelor’s degree in botany from Cal Poly Humboldt and went on to complete her master’s degree in biology under mycologist\, Dr. Terry Henkel\, studying lichens. Sarah now works as a botanist for Redwood National Park where she focuses on ecological restoration and rare plant conservation. DESCRIPTION:The most effective way to protect and encourage biodiversity is to start locally – and on Tuesday\, April 7 at 6pm\, FOLC and BLM King Range present a standalone Zoom presentation with Peter Haggard and Jane Monroe as part of the Lost Coast Lectures series.  In the talk\, they will introduce topics from their book\, Rewilding: Native Gardening for the Pacific Northwest and North Coast\, and will discuss the process of converting (sub)urban yards into habitat for native plants and wildlife and why rewilding is important. If we act now\, in every neighborhood: gardens\, lawns\, parks\, and community gardens can all be rewilded. He worked for the Humboldt County Agricultural Commissioner’s Office as an Agricultural Inspector/Biologist for 35 years. Pete has taught garden-related courses at College of the Redwoods and Cal Poly Humboldt Extension\, and classes in entomology and pest identification for the UC Master Gardener Program. He is coauthor\, with Judy Haggard\, of Insects of the Pacific Northwest and has written many articles on insects and gardening. Since 1977\, he’s been landscaping his garden using native plants to attract endemic wildlife. \nJane Monroe has a BS and an MA in biology from Cal Poly Humboldt. Her master’s thesis was a study of the dune silver bee. She has worked as a biologist\, conducting habitat reviews for northern California plant and animal species. She also worked as a biology/zoology lecturer at CPH. \n

DESCRIPTION:FOLC\, BLM & Cal Poly Humboldt are excited to host a free lecture at the Shelter Cove Community Clubhouse on Friday\, April 10 with Dr. Dawn Goley\, Cal Poly Humboldt Professor of Zoology and Director of the North Coast Stranded Marine Mammal Monitoring Program.  In this lecture\, she will highlight the work of/data collected by the Shelter Cove Community Hub of this program and will share what we learned through the effort and how this relates to the larger data her team collected from over 200 miles of northern CA coastline\, plus share updates on recent viruses affecting marine mammal communities\, including leptospirosis and a recent avian flu found in the elephant seal colony at Ano Nuevo.  The Shelter Cove Community Clubhouse is located at 1555 Upper Pacific Dr. in Shelter Cove.  Doors at 5:30pm with potluck dinner/refreshments and lecture/Q&A at 6:30. \n* photo by Pamela Lauer

DESCRIPTION:All are invited to join BLM & Friends of the Lost Coast in the King Range on from 10a.m. to 2p.m. for the Lost Coast Trail Stewards program. We’ll be working Chemise Mountain Trail to do brushing\, trail tread\, and downed tree removal.  Meet a few minutes before 10am at Nadelos Campground on Chemise Mountain Rd. $10/hr youth stipends are available to ages 12-17. Tools and work gloves provided. Bring your own water and a snack.
