SUMMARY:Neotropical Bird Hike in Salmon Creek
DESCRIPTION:Local naturalist and restoration ecologist\, Kyle Keegan\, will lead a Neotropical Bird Hike at the Fool’s Farm in the Salmon Creek watershed on Sunday\, May 3 from 8a.m. to 1p.m. Focus will be on the ecology\, identification and life history of neotropical birds. Land stewardship practices that can enhance local biodiversity will also be discussed. Participants are encouraged to bring sturdy shoes\, binoculars\, lunch\, water\, and sun protection. The hike will be easy to moderate\, with a few inclines. Space is limited and advance registration is required. Email anna@sanctuaryforest.org or info@lostcoast.org to RSVP. This hike is a co-presentation of Sanctuary Forest & Friends of the Lost Coast.

Professional landscape designer and native plant expert\, Cheryl Lisin\, will be on hand to consult about your planting needs. Activities throughout the day include fun stuff for kids and families\, plus refreshments\, FOLC merchandise\, garden tours\, free coloring books and live music.  Pack your own picnic lunch too! \nCome discover the Lost Coast Education Center and celebrate spring (and Mother’s Day!) with native plants\, while supporting the environmental education & stewardship programs of Friends of the Lost Coast. Native plants are beautiful\, resilient and many are drought tolerant\, perfect for any garden\, so come stock up at Friends of the Lost Coast’s Mother’s Celebration & Native Plant Sale. SUMMARY:Trailhead Hosts - Memorial Day Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Friends of the Lost Coast and BLM King Range’s Trailhead Hosts program organizes volunteers to engage Lost Coast visitors at Black Sands Beach and Mattole Campground on the weekends of highest summer usage – Memorial Day\, July 4th\, and Labor Day. Trailhead Hosts answer questions and share information about the King Range\, beach safety\, park rules/regulations\, and Leave No Trace principles. As a special treat for this Memorial Day Weekend event\, we’ll feature the experts from Leave No Trace\, who will join as Trailhead Hosts (Friday 8am-11am @ Mattole Campground & Saturday 10am-1pm @ Black Sands Beach in Shelter Cove). Stop by the Leave No Trace booth during these windows to meet our guests and learn how practicing Leave No Trace can help keep the Lost Coast wild\, safe\, and sustainable. \nThe larger Trailhead Hosts Weekend runs 4 days\, Friday\, May 22 through Monday\, May 25.  Volunteer shifts are 3 hours in length – 7-10am\, 10am-1pm\, 1-4pm – all days.  A free Communicating Leave No Trace workshop is offered for volunteers on Thursday\, May 21 from 10:30am to 2pm. SUMMARY:Mill Creek Ecology Hike- King Range NCA
DESCRIPTION:Join FOLC & BLM for a rare organized outing to the Mill Creek area of King Range National Conservation Area on Saturday\, May 30. The approximately 950-acre Mill Creek Forest\, added to public ownership around 1995\, is designated by BLM as an Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) and is part of the King Range Wilderness. The tract protects a remnant of low-elevation\, old-growth Douglas fir forest\, a beautiful tributary to the lower Mattole River\, and features a community-designed trail system that showcases a diverse array of native plant species. The hike will be led by FOLC’s own native plant expert\, Cheryl Lisin; BLM Backcountry Ranger\, Kacie Hallahan; and authors of the book Plants of the Lost Coast\, Veronica Yates and Otter Anderson. The intimate hike is limited to 15 participants and runs from 10am to approximately 2pm. It is considered moderately strenuous.
