DESCRIPTION:All are invited to join BLM & Friends of the Lost Coast in the King Range on from 10a.m. to 2p.m. for the Lost Coast Trail Stewards program. We’ll be hitting Low Gap Trail for trail tread and drainage work. Meet 9:50a.m. at the Low Gap Trailhead\, located on King Peak Rd\, approximately 4 miles from its intersection with Shelter Cove Rd. $10/hr youth stipends are available to ages 12-17.  Tools and work gloves provided. SUMMARY:Mini-Mushroom Fair @ Lost Coast Nature Center
DESCRIPTION:Join FOLC & BLM King Range for a mid-winter mini-mushroom fair at the Lost Coast Nature Center in Whitethorn on Saturday\, February 7. Free and open to the public from 12pm to 4pm\, attendees will enjoy a display of recently foraged local fungi\, learn from Lost Coast Mike Paquette about our bounty of local mushrooms and get a hands-on demonstration in how to prepare mushroom slides to view them under microscopes\, and partake in varied mushroom-themed activities – including sketching and creating mushroom-inspired art with Venessa Kay & Darcie Maassen\, plus other fun activities for kids and families. So bundle up (it’s cold in Whitethorn in winter!) and come join us at the Lost Coast Nature Center and Native Plant Garden for a day of mycelium madness as we celebrate all things mushrooms! \nSchedule of activities:\nNoon- event opens\n12:15pm – 1:15- mushroom talk\, slide preparation\, and microscope feature w/ Lost Coast Mike\n1:30pm – 3:00- mushroom art workshop with Venessa Kay & Darcie Maassen\nOngoing activities: recently foraged mushroom display\, microscope viewing\, kid’s activities\, garden tours and mushroom “scavenger” hunt with close-focus binoculars\, plus hot drinks and desserts for donation\, FOLC merch\, and native plants available for sale\n4pm- event ends\n\nWant to get started early? DESCRIPTION:*** This event has been canceled due to weather and road access concerns. It will be rescheduled for early 2027. \nA favorite Lost Coast destination\, Punta Gorda offers stunning coastal scenery\, an historic/recently renovated lighthouse\, and a thriving elephant seal colony – and\, on Saturday\, February 21\, join Mattole Restoration Council\, Friends of the Lost Coast & BLM King Range for a rare wintertime hike\, when enormous male elephant seals are present on the beach!  Featuring Dr. Dawn Goley\, Professor of Zoology at Cal Poly Humboldt\, this outing offers an opportunity to learn about the ever-growing elephant seal colony at Punta Gorda – with a special focus on male elephant seals. The group will meet at 10a.m. at the Mattole Beach parking area\, located at the end of Lighthouse Rd near Petrolia\, before caravanning a short distance in 4WD vehicles to Windy Point Rd for a 1.8 mile moderate downhill hike. This hike is weather and access road dependent. Participants should bring water and a snack\, dress in layers with rain jacket\, wear sturdy/waterproof footwear – and be prepared for a minor creek crossing.
