SUMMARY:Trailhead Hosts - Labor Day Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Friends of the Lost Coast and BLM King Range’s Trailhead Hosts program organizes volunteers to assist BLM with engaging visitors at Black Sands Beach in Shelter Cove on the weekends of highest summer usage – Memorial Day\, July 4th and Labor Day. Our Trailhead Hosts answer questions and share information about the King Range\, beach safety\, park rules/regulations\, and Leave No Trace principles. This Labor Day Weekend event runs 4 days\, August 29-September 1 and will be held at the Black Sands Beach trailhead\, located at 856 Beach Rd in Shelter Cove. SUMMARY:King Peak Moonlight Hike w/ Paul Sever
DESCRIPTION:Join FOLC & BLM King Range Manager\, Paul Sever\, on Saturday\, September 6 for a pre-full moon hike to King Peak\, highest point in King Range National Conservation Area and one of the tallest coastal peaks in the Lower 48 States! Meet at the BLM office in Whitethorn at 3:30pm to caravan to Lightning Trailhead (high clearance 4WD recommended). We will then summit the peak (4088 ft)\, enjoy sunset\, and start our journey back under the light of the rising moon. This 4.8 mile round trip hike includes nearly 2000 ft of elevation gain and will be strenuous for some. Returning in the moonlight presents additional risks\, a factor that should be considered before signing up. This year’s participating activity booths include BLM King Range\, CA State Parks\, Eel River Wailaki\, Trees Foundation\, Sequoia Park Zoo\, the Marine Protected Area Collaborative Network\, Friends of the Dunes\, Eel River Recovery Project\, Northern Mendocino Ecosystem Recovery Alliance\, Early Head Start\, and the SFHS Horticulture Class & Earth Club\, plus food and drink by/benefitting Skyfish School. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the National Conservation Lands this year\, stewardship projects kick off at 10am at Tolkan Campground on King Peak Rd. The event culminates with free lunch at 1:30p.m and volunteers will also receive a complimentary National Public Lands Day t-shirt and public lands pass. National Public Lands Day is the largest volunteer stewardship event of the year\, with service projects happening throughout the U.S.!
